Xenical, which is used in the treatment of obesity, contains the active ingredient Xenical. Xenical belongs to the class of medicines called lipase inhibitors and works by preventing your body from absorbing too much of the fat you eat.
Xenical is prescribed to people with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, and an initial weight of 5 to 7 kg (or more) to a body mass index of 27 or more. It is also prescribed to people who have a body mass index of 27 to 28 kg (or more) or more, and who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Xenical is indicated for the treatment of obesity in adults, although the exact indication for the use of Xenical in patients with a BMI of 30 or higher is not known. The use of Xenical in patients who are at high risk of developing a new form of obesity is controversial. One study showed that Xenical treatment in these patients resulted in a reduced risk of becoming overweight or obese, and a study showed that patients who were treated with Xenical showed reduced fat absorption and weight gain.
Xenical should only be used as an initial aid to overweight and obese people with a BMI of 30 or higher.
Xenical is not indicated for use in patients who have a BMI of 27 to 28 kg or more. However, the use of Xenical in those who are at high risk of developing a new form of obesity should only be done under medical supervision.
The primary aim of the trial is to determine whether orlistat, the active ingredient in Xenical, is more effective in the prevention of obesity compared to a placebo in adults. We will run a clinical trial to investigate the effect of a combination of a reduced-calorie, high-fat diet, and a reduced-calorie diet on the risk of being overweight and obese in people with a BMI of 30 or higher.
